Berna-Dean Holland

Welcome!

I am a Singer-Songwriter from Alberta Canada.  My musical style ranges from Acoustic Folk to what might be defined as Bluegrass influenced Alternative Country.

A friend once described my singing style as what she could envision the voice of a  "love child" between Joni Mitchell and Rosanne Cash to sound like. Others have said I sound a bit like Kate Wolf, Kathy Mattea  and Jennifer Warnes.   I cannot say that I have my own notion of who I sound like or where to definitively place my music, but I am very honoured to have been musically described in reference to any of these amazing and iconic artists.  Essentially a self taught musician and songwriter, I have been fond of many artists over the years,  so there surely must have been some influences along the way.

I typically write about what I observe in the world around me; from the person just trying to make a living, to songs about my concern for the Natural World. Some songs could be described as stories and others perhaps as contemporary "Protest" songs.  With respect to the latter,  I believe Music and Art are languages that all humans can understand and if my music manages to "speak" to people, then I will have been glad to have begun a conversation.

I have been singing, playing guitar and "making up" songs since I was a kid, but have really only stepped on to the stage within the last few years. This has included performing with two very talented musicians Jack Loree on Dobro, Banjo, Lead Guitar and Harmony Vocals and  Norm Rooke on the Upright Bass and Harmony Vocals. With Jack at the helm as Producer, both Jack and Norm joined me to  record my debut CD "Fledgling"  in the Summer of 2009 .  "Fledgling" was subsequently released on April 8th, 2010.  Other musicians featured on this CD were Lorne Foster on Mandolin, Jacqueline Drew on Accordion and Harmony Vocals and Alana Luft on Cello.

I look forward to meeting you at my concerts or if you want to send an email to say hello, just click the "Contact" button above.

Love and Good Wishes,
